Coping with tantrums and meltdowns in toddlers and young children

Tantrums and Meltdowns

Toddlers and young children often don't have the words and the ability to express themselves, and they can easily become very frustrated. Their frustration quickly spirals out of control and they end up screaming, shouting and crying in an effort to make themselves understood.

Parents find this behaviour puzzling and annoying and they may shout back in an effort to gain control.
They often experience their children's behaviour as concerning and they also become anxious and troubled in that moment, lost for words and unsure of how to handle the situation.

It's a scary place for both toddlers and their parents.

Being able to read the cues before the tantrum erupts and being able to step in and to gently defuse the situation is an important skill for parents to learn. Being able to manage their own reactions, to stay calm and to respond effectively is also an important skill.

When you understand your child’s sensory profile and what makes them tick, and when you have insight into your own sensory profile and what makes you tick, it becomes so much easier to figure the situation, to identify the triggers and to put in sensory and practical strategies that can avoid and manage tricky situations.

I can assist you in addressing tantrum and meltdown behaviour and in finding solutions which address the root causes.
