Colicy Babies

Colicy babies may be babies who have an allergy, and this should be considered in babies who have persistent colic or reflux. The information which follows is helpful when colic persists after ruling out other dietary or medical causes.

Colicy babies are particularly restless.

They usually have poor sleep patterns and their “awake” time is often fretful and unhappy.

Their parents struggle to calm them. This can be emotionally stressful, and mothers in particular, feel that there is something wrong with her, or with what she is doing, or not doing.

Parents of colicy babies are usually sleep deprived. These are typically very sensitive babies who are easily unsettled by any change in their routines.

They are often particularly sensitive to sensory input such as loud noises and crowd situations.

These babies often respond poorly to touch input, and might dislike being dressed or undressed or having their nappies changed. They might pull away or arch their backs as a sign of extreme avoidance.

Sometimes they may dislike being held or being cuddled, or, they might only be soothed and settled when they are held.

Figuring what upsets your baby and how to assist them in soothing can make a huge difference to them, as well as to the whole family! A sensory integrative approach can be of considerable assistance for the colicy baby.
